Yahoo launches new mobile search service
January 8, 2007 According to various news reports, Yahoo has launched a new mobile search service called Yahoo One Search which the company says takes a different path towards displaying search results on cell phones and other mobile devices. Yahoo's new mobile search service has very different requirements. With limited bandwidth and a tiny screen size, this new service makes information available without having to click on multiple links. Yahoo OneSearch finds information through a rather convoluted navigation process, as you might have to do on more conventional mobile search services. Marco Boerries, senior v.p. of the company said “Yahoo One Search modifies the mobile search lansdcape by fundamentally improving the way consumers access and use the Web on their cell phones.” “Yahoo OneSearch delivers a mobile-optimized search query that understands what consumers are looking for, and presents relevant results, not just a list of links to Web sites. Yahoo One Search delivers the right results with just one search. In addition to providing relevant links to the Internet and various mobile websites, the Yahoo's new OneSearch provides immediate answers for business listings, movies, sports, news, events, celebrity gossip, stock and finance information, all from a single search. If the search keyword used is “ipod”, the top of the results page includes links from Shopping.com, with prices and reviews that could help the user who’s considering a purchase. A search for “San Francisco” will return weather, traffic information and local news about that city. Yahoo has merged all the tabs in the search box and did its best to determine the most relevant information, without asking the user to select a specific vertical. Source: Search Engine Journal
