Beginning in the second quarter, some LG handsets will be pre-installed with Google applications and services, and will be shipped internationally, including the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the European Community and most of Asia.

Overall, LG Electronics Ltd. claims its handsets are designed to offer a more dynamic user experience, including one-click access to Google search through an icon in its application menu.

Additional features of LG's new handsets include:

  • Google Maps for Mobile - It will enable users to view maps and satellite imagery, find local businesses and get various driving directions.

  • Blogger Mobile - An application suite that allows users the upload and/or download of images and text, mostly at the mobile blogging community.

  • Gmail for Mobile - It's a Java-based application that offers higher speed, convenience and functionality to Google's e-mail service.

Overall, this deal, as well as others indicate how important wireless communications are becoming. Google would probaly say that it's "a land grab" to build consumer awareness of its mobile products, and will further extend the Google brand.

Of course, whether any of this translates into actual and real usage will have to be analyzed later as these LG handsets start shipping, and if consumers will really adopt them in the first place.

It may take a full year to see if this strategy works and its overall impact. But Search Engine Journal editor Loren Baker thinks it may be some kind of insurance for Google.
