Today, Google is expected to announce that its new App Engine will now be open to developers.

Overall, this would be a welcome development for the approximately 151,500 developers who have been waiting for it for more than 6 months.

Now developers and integrators can start using the platform in their own applications, which will offer more features to their users.

What does Google App Engine offer developers? It allows them to create their own Internet applications using the same platform and feature set that Google uses for its own apps.

With Google's own infrastructure, now developers can start creating highly scalable applications for their open source projects.

Additionally, Google is announcing new costs for its computing resources using the Google App Engine.

The new cost structure is:

  • $0.10 to $0.12 per CPU core-hour
  • $0.15 to $0.18 per GB-month of storage
  • $0.11 to $0.13 per GB outgoing bandwidth
  • $0.09 to $0.11 per GB incoming bandwidth
  • This new pricing shall take effect later this year.

Google's new App Engine will also provide two new APIs - image manipulation and memcache APIs.

The image manipulation API will allow developers to scale, rotate and crop images sitting on a server.

Additionally, memcache API boasts high-performance caching layers that would make page rendering faster.
